GUINEA-FOWL

Two species of guinea-fowl are found: Crowned (Numida meleagris) and Crested (Guttera pucherani). Crested guinea-fowl are very rare and the only area where they are likely to be seen is at Pafuri along the road winding parallel to the Luvuvhu river, They are communal birds, preferring overgrown bush adjoining rivers, and feed on fruit, seeds and insects. They are easily recognized by the characteristic tuft of irregularly directed black feathers on top of the head.

Crowned guinea-fowl are common and widely distributed, especially in the vicinity of rivers or other sources of permanent water. Like crested guinea-fowl, they are gregarious and live in communities, Although they fly well and for considerable distances, they prefer running from danger.
