Common, or Grey Duiker (Sylvicapra grimmia)

THE HERBIVORES AND OMNIVORES

Grey Duiker

These apprehensive little antelope are widespread throughout most areas, but are not often seen. At the first hint of danger they streak away with a characteristic erratic run punctuated by short bouncy leaps.

In size and shape duikers are very similar to steenbok, but can be recognized by their more grayish-brown hide and the short black crest of hairs between the short horns which project straight up from the top of the male's head.

Duiker prefer more thickly wooded country such as that offered by the riverine forests, and acaciaibush-willow / marula-covered areas in the south, where they are more common than in the mopane-dominated open plains. In their chosen habitats they browse contentedly on leaves during early mornings and late afternoons, lying up in shaded clumps of vegetation during the midday heat. They are normally seen singly, very rarely as a pair. Only the males have horns.
