Klipspringer (Oreotragus oreotragus)

THE HERBIVORES AND OMNIVORES

Klipspringer

Poised like statues frozen atop the rocks and boulders which litter many of the granite hills dotting the otherwise endless plains, these extraordinarily dainty and hand some animals never fail to evoke an exclamation of surprise and admiration from visitors confronted with the sight. Klipspringers are one of nature's oddities, for they prefer to live in the desolate hills away from the conglomeration of other antelope species which complete for food on the open plains. Here amidst and on the rocks, they browse on the shrubs and trees which share their rugged home.

Translated from Afrikaans, the name means 'rock-jumper', a per- feet description of this graceful antelope which leaps fearlessly from boulder to boulder with nimble ease. Fairly small animals with a yellowish-grey coat, only the males have short, straight, upward-pointing horns. Klipspringers are usually found singly or in pairs. They are distributed widely, but are relatively uncommon and not often seen.
